Wearable Cardioverter-Defibrillator & Sudden Cardiac Death
CBSMD

Patients with reduced ejection fraction after myocardial infarction(MI) have high rates of sudden death. Cardioverter-defibrillators sought of reduce mortality in these patients while impanted months to years after myocardial infarction. Current guidelines for primary prevention for sudden death using implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation recommend waiting 40 days after acute MI and 90 days after revascularization. Wearable cardioverter-defibrillator (WCD) can be selected as a preventive device during the waiting period before ICD implantation. Current guidelines give a Class IIa recommendation for the use of WCD in secondary prevention when implantable cardioverter-defibrillator removal is required and a Class IIb recommendation for all other scenarios, including primary prevention in individuals considered at high risk.
